Dr. Martin Luther King submitted that  “one of the most common tendencies of human nature is that of placing responsibility on some external agency (government) for sins we have committed or mistakes we have made".   The rate at which abnormality and social vices is taking over the  "Garden City" ( even though there's no garden ) is alarming. It is eating deep than cancer and needs a thorough attention of everyone, as individuals and collectively, as a society - perhaps we still can find sane voice of reason amongst us.   On the 20th of August, 2016 a Corps member, Olakitan (not real name) was robbed of his belongings in a afternoon on the street of  'Garden City'. Hmmmm... of cause, I know of robbers who operate in the dark with guns and all that, but it was a shock to know that on this side of the country robbers are the owners of the streets - in daylight.   Albeit, I began to think of what the future holds for a nation of youth who have married despondency for flimsy excuses. The following advice(s) then came to mind and I thought it wise to share with everyone - first, the people of Rivers State and then, the teeming youth population of my dear country.   We, (Rivers State youth) must borrow a leaf from Helen Keller who was born blind and deaf,  yet, was able to overcome these hereditary traits to become one of the most admired people in the world.   In the same light, Franklin D. Roosevelt who had infantile paralysis, had the power of independence and rose to become president of the United States. Marian Anderson was born in poverty in Philadelphia, but developed her voice to the point where she became one of the world's greatest contraltos.   Jesus Christ as the best example of one who overcame non-optimal circumstances.  His parents were not of high social standing or people of wealth...not a politician nor an elite, followed through with his desire to bring humanity closer to God.   Therefore, saying environment, government, heredity etc are the cause of our deadliest ailment (robbery) and predicament in Port - Harcourt is not a genuine excuse.   To validate my position, hear again from Dr. King;  "Not environment, not heredity, but personal response is the final determining factor in our lives. And herein lies our area of responsibility."   Your life is what you make it. If you prepare yourself academically and experientially through various work situations, you can become whatever you dream.   Let us inculcate the notion of what can I do to better my community? If you think our politicians are robbing us, must we rob join them to rob ourselves?
