Listening to the audio clip that was recorded by the Army Officer, Captain Sagir Koli, which explained the conspiracy behind the June 21 Ekiti state guber election, I began to wonder what defines the sanctity and sovereignty of a nation. 

Is it just the freedom from other nations, external influences or just clearly defined border lines? I can not but wonder if truly this geographical masterpiece is a nation with defined rules and laws; a society guided by ethos and driven by value. My mind wandered so far and wide that I asked if there is anything or institution that can be referred to as sacred in Nigeria. 

The Nigerian Police already battered her own image with the traditional and ritual bribe collection of her officers. The judiciary threw her own respect to the dogs through delay of judgement in so many cases thereby denying people justice. It is more sardonic when you remember that occupants of the hallowed chambers have less or no regard for the law we pay them to make. After all, they feel they are not responsible and answerable to us. 

It is still unfathomable that the Nigerian Army we revered so much, pray for daily and speak out for; when necessary ( calling for better welfare packages for those on the front line) can be bastardised by bloody civilians. The Nigerian Army, our last and most sacrosanct line of protection has been muddied up by people who have refused to turn new leaf after giving them second chance on a platter of gold. The evidence from the released audio clip, unless proven to be a work of an artist (which I seriously doubt), is an indictment on the Nigerian Army and every other public servant that was implicated in it. They have abused their offices, misappropriated power, and trampled on our collective freedom. 

This show of shame must however not be swept under the carpet like every other wrong doing that has gone into the cloud. It is a thorough investigation into this that would actually help us find out if the recording was real or not. 

It would also help the indicted people clear their names. It must be stated without fear or favour that this evidence might truly discredit the June 21 election in Ekiti State but it would never account for the defeat of the then incumbent governor. We all agreed after the polls that the Ekiti election would be for a very long time, a topic for debate amongst political pundits and watchers alike. Eight months later, there is a new angle in the discourse. 

The most imperative issue at this very critical state of our life is what the security apparatus would make out of this. What our dear Mrs Marilyn Ogar would say and what the DSS would do; what the Nigerian Army would prove to us through actions and inactions and the presidency, especially. After all, Mr President was said to have signed off on the modalities and those that didn't come for ‘a tea party’ made it clear. 

I am particularly interested in what the hierarchy of NA would do since they are killing their officers for speaking against their commanders. Though they have proven their partisanship in the wake of the postponed elections, I want to believe they would use this #EkitiGate to right their wrongs. The public must also make it a point of duty, irrespective of what you make out of the recording to keep watch on the family of the sergeant who released the audio clip so that things that are mysterious don't begin to happen to them.
